The inGear is comprised of several sprockets of a wide range of sizes which are each divided into segments. The chain is transitioned from one sprocket to another sprocket of a different size (essentially changing a gear) by selectively moving individual segments along an axis in or out of the path of the chain. This is done when the segments are in the area where the chain does not engage with the sprockets – the non-contact zone. The non-contact zone is in any chain or belt sprocket system, even on your bike. It is the area of a sprocket where the chain or belt is not engaged with the teeth. When all the segments of the destination sprocket are in position to complete the whole sprocket and engage the chain, the transition from one size to another is complete.
Our toothed system: During any transition, the maximum number of teeth on the chain and sprocket remain engaged from both the original sprocket and the destination sprocket. This is achieved by designing a ‘key sprocket segment’ for each sprocket size. This segment will be the first to engage the chain when changing from a smaller sprocket to a larger one, or vice-versa.
The key: When the key sprocket segment engages the chain, its particular angular position in relation to the teeth of the smaller sprocket is engineered so that the teeth of the key sprocket segment will seamlessly engage the teeth of the chain. Once it is in position, all other segments of the same sprocket follow and engage the chain. A similar key sprocket segment is used for the shift from a larger to smaller sprocket and performs the same function though it is the last segment of its sprocket to engage the chain.
What does this mean? This process ensures the chain never moves from side to side, maintaining its position though changing gears either up or down. A computerized controller and a mechanical and electrical actuation system dictate the movements of selectable, individual sprocket segments to ensure that the proper sequence is executed at high speed. In addition to this, our integral tensioner guarantees that the chain keeps its tension no matter what gear it is engaged with.
